General Biking Questions
We don't see many cyclists in Prague. Is biking safe?
Yes, biking is safe in Prague. Cyclists use a combination of bike-lanes, sidewalks, and streets making biking the most efficient way of travel. Follow our professional guides on tour or take a rental and allow us to send you in the right direction, following the safest routes in the city.
Bike messengers, rickshaws and Praha Bike tours and rentals are usually the only bikes you'll see in the center of prague. Locals take advantage of the efficient public transportation system while in the city center and enjoy cycling through parks and the countryside.
What if I haven't ridden a bike in 20 years?
At Praha Bike we pride ourselves in the nostalgia of getting back on a bike after a long time, remembering when we were a kid again, when we looked at the world with wide-eyes and life without training-wheels (stabilizers). We'll discover Prague with those same wide-eyes and we can always put the training-wheels back on. Or how about riding back seat on our tandem bike while one of our guides tours you through the city.
Am I ready for a bicycle tour?
After numerous years experience creating, participating in, and hosting bicycle events and tours, we know that most "active" people enjoy bicycle tours. If you are new to touring, or to cycling, we assure you that our tours are designed for every level of rider, from beginner to advanced. Our tours are designed to give a good balance between sightseeing and exercise. We provide ample time for stops along the way.
There are other ways to vacation. Why do a bike tour?
Bike touring allows you to experience travel on multiple levels not available to the auto traveler or even compared to a walking tour. Incorporating outdoor exercise into your day makes your senses come alive and makes every facet of your trip more enjoyable. On a bicycle, you are "human powering" your transportation - earning every wonderful view and dictating the pace of your experience so that you can "stop and smell the roses" whenever the inclination arises. Combine this with a sense of adventure that being on a bike provides as well as the feeling of accomplishment you get at the end of the tour, and it's no wonder that our guests keep coming back to us year after year.

Choosing Outdoor Biking Clothing and Accessories
Regardless of whether it is undertaken for fun, sport or mere transportation, biking is an outdoor activity that is enjoyed by hundreds of millions of people worldwide on a daily basis. Providing an excellent opportunity to increase personal fitness whilst experiencing all the benefits of nature, biking is also seen as an environmentally friendly way to travel from A to B. As a sport or leisure activity, biking often proves to be extremely challenging and is usually undertaken on tracks, street circuits or in the great outdoors. Of course, one of the main advantages of biking is also one of its greatest disadvantages, as exposure to the elements can reward and punish in equal measure. Therefore, it is always essential that appropriate clothing is worn for any biking adventure.
Accessories are also important when biking, so items such as helmets and gloves must be chosen with considerable care. In respect to the helmet, which is obviously a key piece of equipment for cyclists, there are a number of different styles, shapes and sizes to consider. One of the major manufacturers of biking helmets is Bell, which produces a range of goods such as the Drop Full Face, Sweep and Volt Racing helmets. Each of these items is designed for a slightly different type of biking experience, which is important to consider when cycling to work each week day and mountain biking during the weekend. Gloves are also important accessories that can be worn in all weather conditions as they provide maximum grip of the handlebars in addition to basic protection from knocks, bumps and the harsh elements. Indeed, frozen fingertips are generally undesirable when biking on a cold winter morning.
In terms of clothing, sleeve and sleeveless jerseys are favourites among cyclists in just about all weather conditions. Nevertheless, in summer, it is usually the case that a loose-fitting jersey, such as one produced by Dakine, is worn on its own. In winter, however, it is customary to wear a tight-fitting jersey, which better insulates the body, as an undergarment (although base layers can also be employed). Indeed, waterproof jackets are typically worn over jerseys unless it is warm and sunny, not least because the act of cycling can cause the elements to feel much harsher than they are in reality. Likewise, cycling shorts can be worn in all conditions but in winter it is more common for bikers to wear full length trousers and, when it is especially cold, thermal base layers underneath.
Finally, appropriate footwear is another essential piece of kit for bikers that is often overlooked to an extent. Ultimately, it is necessary to purchase lightweight trainers or shoes that offer good grip but not too much in the way of tread or heel. On the other hand, flat shoes can be undesirable if mountain biking in the winter as there will be numerous occasions on which the rider must travel by foot. Merrell shoes are useful in just about all situations as they comprise versatile and hard wearing materials whilst featuring excellent grip and comfort.
